UJ Christmas concert opens Friday

Plan to join in the sweet sounds of student voices Friday and Saturday Dec. 14-15, at 7:30 p.m. in St. James Basilica, for an evening of great music and inspiration.

The University of Jamestown's concert choir has always kicked off the holiday season with its Christmas concert. For many years it was in Voorhees Chapel, then the Hansen Center gymnasium, the Reiland Fine Arts Center's auditorium, and then St. James Basilica.

This year there is no Sunday performance planned for the basilica, so please take note. Tickets are available at the Reiland Fine Arts Center for $12. You may call the box office at 252-3467, ext. 5435, or email the university.

"Christmas Rose," is this year's theme. One of the selections focuses on a motif from the Bible, showing the family line of Christ. It is one of the great stories and songs taken from Isaiah 11:1 is the promise of life through the lineage of Christ.

Taken from the International version of the Bible: "A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots, a branch will bear fruit." Isaiah 11:1; NIV. It is cross-referenced in Matthew 1:1 of the New Testament, where the genealogy of Christ lists Jesus as "the son of David."

Selections this year will be varied and symbolic. The tradition of Christmas music at the University of Jamestown is as old as the institution. Every year new renditions of familiar songs renews our spirit for the upcoming holidays. This year will be a lovely continuum of that tradition.

The voices that will bring that spirit to our ears include these students:.
