Bismarck author releases historical fiction novel

Gayle Larson Schuck has released her second novel, “Secrets of the Dark Closet,” a coming-of-age tale set in Iowa and North Dakota.

The story is based on Schuck’s family history. In the novel, on the day that Bessie Kloubec turns 11 in 1899, her family begins to unravel in Webster County, Iowa. Her family experiences a series of disasters caused by her father’s pain-induced alcoholism. The story moves five years ahead to 1904. Bessie and her family have moved to LaMoure, N.D., and think they have put the past behind them. New challenges await.

Schuck is a former public relations executive who lives in Bismarck. She has another book, “By the Banks of Cottonwood Creek.”

“Secrets of the Dark Closet” is available at the AAUW Used Bookstore/Dakota Store, 601 1st Ave. S, Jamestown. Schuck’s books are also available at
