Letter to the editro: Something needs to be done about illegal aliens

Sanctuary cities were in the news recently. These are cities and other jurisdictions that refuse to turn over illegal aliens to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Instead, they shelter the illegal aliens and/or cut them loose. Many of these illegals are criminals and repeat offenders to boot, and once cut loose are free to continue their reign of terror on U.S. citizens. That’s right. A person who’s not even supposed to be here is protected, then cut loose to wreak havoc on those of us who are supposed to be here. If you take exception to a city refusing to cooperate with the federal government and then dumping criminals, some of them violent, on our streets, you’re in the majority. In a recent poll, 62 percent of Americans said they were disgusted with the actions of sanctuary cities and want the federal government to do something about it.

Republicans, beholden to the cheap labor lobby led by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, are not real enthused about taking on the illegal immigration problem. However, they are slightly better than the Democrats on the issue, and that fact was proven again recently. Republicans in the U.S. Senate, to their credit, crafted a bill which would withhold some federal funding from sanctuary cities. A common-sense idea if there ever was one, and an idea that boasts the overwhelming support of the American public. But it was not very popular with North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp and all but two of her fellow Senate Democrats, who successfully blocked the bill using the Senate filibuster rules. As a result, this bill will not see an up-or-down vote. It’s true that President Barack Obama would’ve vetoed the bill anyway, but at the very least, that veto would hopefully wake up some clueless Americans, allow them to smell the coffee and realize which team Obama is playing for. Meanwhile, if you voted for Heitkamp, you should be asking yourself who she’s representing. Is she working for the citizens of North Dakota and the United States, or is she working for the unlimited immigration, open border lobbyists like La Raza?

Nobody should be surprised by Heitkamp’s vote. NumbersUSA is an effective lobbying group looking out for the American worker. It advocates for a U.S. immigration policy that actually benefits citizens instead of special interests, politicians and big business. It assigned a grade of F- to Heitkamp based on her votes and positions on immigration issues.

ICE estimates there are currently 1.2 million criminal aliens at large in our country. With politicians like Heitkamp working against the best interests of their constituents, the illegal alien crime spree will surely continue.
