Letter to the editor: Sentence doesn’t make sense for the crime
In the Aug. 11 issue of The Jamestown Sun there was information pertaining to the court proceedings of Adair Ackerman.
Ackerman was convicted of causing bodily injury to a Jamestown Police Department officer, a Class C felony.
Judge Cherie Clark sentenced Ackerman to 30 days at the Stutsman County jail. She was also given one year of probation. She also had to pay $500 in various fees.
A Class C felony is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
What is wrong with this picture? The police protect us. Why don’t judges protect them? Or maybe it is only certain judges who seem to have a screwed up sense of fairness and justice?
Most judges are elected. Their decisions can have a tremendous over effect on how safe we are now and will be in the future.
