The Former Governors' Mansion State Historic Site in Bismarck will host the Halloween Grand Ball from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at the mansion.

Entry is free, but participants must be 14 years of age or older to attend. Those under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian with them. A costume is required for entry.

Prizes will be randomly given out for costumes; historical accuracy, effort and uniqueness will help.

Sarah Walker will lead the dancing.

She will instruct and lead guests in a variety of ballroom and Halloween dances.

She taught ballroom dance at the University of North Dakota. Afterward, she returned to Bismarck, and currently teaches dance classes.

Besides dancing and socializing, guests will be able to look around the mansion and, maybe get a chance to learn the story of former Gov. Frank Briggs (1858-98).

Folklore has it that Briggs, who died in office, still haunts the place to this day. Briggs was the state's first governor to die in office. He served from Jan. 6, 1897, until Aug. 9, 1898, when he died from tuberculosis at the age of 39.
