MINNEAPOLIS -- The new Target Field foods were announced today, and compared with years past, there are fewer shiny new things but still plenty to get excited about.

Chef Gerard Klass, who has been developing his business model through a weekly pop-up at Breaking Bread Cafe in Minneapolis, will bring his Soul Bowl concept to the stadium. You’ll be able to order combinations that include shaggy yellow rice, jerk chicken, smoked mushrooms, sweet corn, barbecue braised beef, mac and cheese, and greens (at Section 120).

The stadium is also adding a new 2-foot-long hot dog they’re calling “Boomstick,” named after the Twins’ new designated hitter Nelson Cruz. The behemoth dog is topped with chili, nacho cheese, grilled onions and jalapenos (Section 127).

Also new this year are craft sandwiches that include a grown-up grilled cheese (smoked cheddar, provolone and marinated tomatoes on thick-sliced brioche), a Philly cheesesteak and peanut butter and jelly with candied bacon (Section 114).

Hot Indian foods is adding a vegan channa rice bowl, which consists of chickpeas simmered in a smooth tomato masala sauce, served over garlic rice and topped with a mango and apple slaw and papadums (Section 120).

Roots for the Home Team, as usual, has a few creative new salads: the Bollywood Smash, roasted cauliflower and chickpeas tossed with sorghum, mint, raisins and a bok choy slaw topped with sunflower seeds and served with a mango vinaigrette; and the Northside Fresh, black-eyed peas, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, Brussels sprouts, serrano pepper, and currants topped with crispy wontons and pepitas in an avocado lime dressing (Section 101).

In addition, the ballpark renovated the Gate 34 entrance and is now calling it the Gate 34 Experience, which includes food offerings that will rotate on a series-by-series basis. Some of the initial offerings include Thumbs Cookies, Dearest Baker, Spinning Wylde cotton candy, Breaking Bread Cafe, Hip Pop Gourmet Popcorn and Zamboni’s Pizza and Pub.
