NYNY Challenge: Take care of your back
Congratulations to Team SCHSC, the top overall point earner for New Year New You Challenge Week 4.
Team SCHSC includes 10 participants from the South Central Human Services Center. Team NS Nuts, from Jamestown Regional Medical Center’s Apple Basket Café, earned the most points for the week. NYNY is an eightweek wellness challenge that encourages participants to develop positive lifestyle changes.
NYNY is about exercising and eating right. It’s also about staying healthy. One way to improve or maintain health is through proper care of our backs.
Lower backs are a common source of injury, especially for people who do heavy lifting, lots of twisting or engage in sudden movements, said Stephanie Erlandson, JRMC physical therapist. The injuries occur from simple movements, however, the pain can be severe. It can also limit a person’s ability to work, exercise and care for family.
To prevent lower back injuries, exercise your core. Core muscles, located in the abdomen, benefit from low-impact exercises like walking, Erlandson said. Correcting your posture can also help. Erlandson recommends setting the timer on your phone to remind yourself to get up and walk around at least once an hour if you sit most of the work day.
For this week’s five NYNY bonus points, practice your posture while watching any district high school basketball tournament. In addition, NYNY participants can earn points for power down activities including autogenic relaxation, progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing, meditation and yoga.
