FARGO (AP) -- Milk production in North Dakota during October, November and December totaled 92 million pounds, down 8 percent from the fourth quarter of 2008.

The Agriculture Department said the average number of milk cows during the quarter stood at 21,000, down 4,000 from a year earlier and down 1,000 from the previous quarter.

Milk produced per cow was 4,370 pounds, compared with 4,000 pounds last year and 4,320 pounds the previous quarter.

Nationwide, milk production for the three months totaled 46.2 billion pounds, down 1 percent from 2008.
