BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- A Burleigh County detention officer has been fired and charged with assault for allegedly putting an inmate in a headlock, kneeing him in the groin and pushing his head into a wall.
The Bismarck Tribune reports that 40-year-old Corey Wiege was charged Thursday with misdemeanor simple assault and is due in court June 8. He does not have a listed telephone number and court records do not list an attorney.
Wiege is accused of assaulting 23-year-old Carlos Mendez Jr. when Bismarck police officers brought him to the jail on March 27. Sheriff Pat Heinert says Wiege had been with the department for more than five years.
Mendez has pleaded not guilty to assault on a peace officer and contact by bodily fluids. He allegedly kicked and spit on an officer.
