David Winter was sentenced Tuesday in state district court. He pleaded guilty last August to a murder charge.
Judge Bruce Romanick handed down a 40-year prison term. Romanick suspended all but 18 years of the sentence.
Winter killed his 75-year-old father, Lawrence, last March 30. The Winters lived together. Lawrence Winter was a retired pastor who suffered from dementia.
David Winter said he didn't have help caring for his father. David Winter said he got angry one night and "snapped."
Police say he bashed his father's head with a flashlight more than 40 times and stabbed him more than a dozen times.
