An estimated $9,000 in damage happened in a two-car accident Monday, according to the Jamestown Police Department.
The accident occurred at 11:49 p.m. in the 400 block of Second Street Southwest, near the intersection of Fifth Avenue Southwest.
Jerry L. Lopez, 28, 611 11th St. NE No. 11, Jamestown, was driving a 2000 Mercury east on Second Street Southwest when he sideswiped a parked 2005 Mazda car facing east that was parked on the south side of the street. Police said he left the scene after learning his vehicle was disabled. Lopez was located by police officers on First Street approximately five to six blocks away from the accident scene. He first claimed he was chasing his vehicle on foot after it was stolen, but later admitted he had been driving his car at the time of the accident, according to the report.
Lopez was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, he said.
Damage was estimated at $4,500 to the Mercury and $4,500 to the Mazda.
Lopez was arrested for DUI, driving under revocation and felony criminal mischief. He was cited for leaving the scene of an accident involving an unattended vehicle, failed to give immediate notice of an accident, no liability insurance and failed to register vehicle upon gainful employment.
