NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) -- A $20 million health clinic has opened on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation.

The Elbowoods Memorial Health Center in New Town opened Oct. 17. A grand opening was held Thursday with numerous tribal, state and federal officials on hand, including Gov. Jack Dalrymple. He says the clinic will expand health services in the region.

The 43,000-square-foot clinic funded by the federal government is six times larger than the old clinic west of New Town that had served as the main medical facility since the 1960s. Seventy people work at the new clinic that is named after the community of Elbowoods, which was flooded when Garrison Dam was built.
