A 65-year-old man was killed in a fire Sunday afternoon, Jan. 23, in Valley City, North Dakota.

Anthony Joe Mitchell, Valley City, was found dead in the lower level of the house, according to Valley City Police Chief Phil Hatcher. The remains have been sent to University of North Dakota's forensic pathology department for an autopsy.

The Valley City Fire and Valley City Police departments were dispatched at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday to a house in the 900 block of 2nd Street Southeast. A large amount of fire and smoke prevented Valley City police officers from entering the home to search for residents, Hatcher said.

The Valley City Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire.

The home is a total loss. Hatcher said the cause of the fire is unknown.
