FARGO, N.D. (AP) -- North Dakota's 22 public safety answering points handled about 1.2 million phone calls last year, including nearly 205,000 911 calls.
The Emergency Services Communication in North Dakota report presented to state lawmakers this week says a sustained growth in 911 calls of about 13 percent per year is startling when contrasted with the state's stable population.
The report says much of the increase can be attributed to multiple calls for a single emergency due to the proliferation of cell phones. Terry Traynor with the North Dakota Association of Counties says about two-thirds of 911 calls are now being made on cell phones.
