A semi truck driver was cited for operating without a permit following a collision with a bridge on Monday in Morton County, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at 3:40 p.m., when an eastbound 2014 Kenworth Semi truck hauling oversized oilfield equipment on Interstate 94 took the Sunset Drive exit into Mandan. While turning north onto Sunset Drive the oversized load on the trailer struck the Interstate 94 bridge deck beams.

The collision snapped the trailer in half and wedged the oversized load under the bridge deck, the patrol said. Sunset Drive was closed to traffic for over three hours as equipment and oversized containers were off loaded and the truck and trailer were removed from the scene, the patrol said.

The driver, Patrick McCaslin, 54, Wheatland, Wyo., was not injured. He was wearing a seat belt, the patrol said.

The right lane of Interstate 94 eastbound that crossed the bridge was closed pending a bridge inspection from the North Dakota Department of Transportation on Tuesday.

Ace Towing, Mandan Police Department, Morton County Sheriff’s Office and Mandan Fire Department also responded to the scene.
