Sargent County worker working along roadway dies after being struck by van

RUTLAND, N.D. - A 60-year-old Sargent County worker who was working on the shoulder of a road was struck by a vehicle early Tuesday morning, March 26, and later died.

The man was a member of the county road department crew placing warning signs on the shoulder on the road, the North Dakota Highway Patrol said.

According to the report, Sharilyn Summers, 54, of Britton, S.D., was driving a 2002 Honda Odyssey northbound on Sargent County 10 about six miles south of Rutland around 6:30 a.m. when she collided with a road department pickup parked facing south in the northbound lane.

Summers tried to avoid the crash, turning right toward the eastbound ditch, the Highway Patrol said, striking the front drivers’ side of pickup as her vehicle continued into the ditch.

The worker was transported to Lisbon Medical Center where he died. Summers was not injured in the crash.

Rutland is about 30 miles west of Hankinson in the southeast corner of the state.
