Southern North Dakota man identified in fatal crash on Montana border

FAIRVIEW, Mont. — A name of the 48-year-old Wishek, N.D., man killed in a head-on collision involving three vehicles on Monday, April 29, near the North Dakota-Montana border has been released.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol said Delbert Diegel was driving a 1994 Chevrolet Suburban which collided with a 2015 Ram 3500 pickup after the pickup slowed down to avoid a pickup topper on Highway 58 near the Missouri River. The pickup, driven by Charles James King, 28, of Shebuta, Miss., slid into the northbound lane because of icy conditions, the Highway Patrol said, as Diegel's vehicle was approaching.

Another vehicle, a 2007 Pontiac G5, driven by Jarod Weber, 30, of Sidney, Mont., was traveling behind the pickup, tried to avoid the collision and struck the front bumper of the pickup.

King and Weber were not injured. King's three passengers suffered minor injuries.

Diegel was the only person involved not wearing a seat belt, the Highway Patrol said.
