BROOKINGS, S.D. – Authorities on Tuesday, Jan. 7, identified a Renner, S.D., man who died in a fatal crash Saturday on Interstate 29 west of Flandreau.

Kasper Malsam, 60, was driving a 2005 Toyota Tundra Double Cab, pulling a trailer with an All-Terrain Vehicle on it, north on Interstate 29 at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, when he hit a patch of ice and lost control, according to the State Patrol. The pickup entered the median, rolled and came to a final rest on its roof, the Patrol said.

Malsam was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle onto the interstate’s southbound lanes, where was then struck by a southbound 2018 GMC Acadia SUV. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An 11-year-old female passenger in Malsam's pickup received minor injuries. Thomas Sterzinger, 54, Taunton, Minn., who was driving the SUV, was not injured. Both were wearing seat belts, the Patrol said.
