WATERTOWN, S.D. — One person was killed and two were injured Thursday evening in a two-vehicle, head-on collision near Watertown.

At 5:22 p.m., a westbound 2002 Toyota Highlander is believed to have crossed the center line of state Highway 20, half a mile west of Watertown, and collided with an eastbound 2001 GMC Yukon, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

The 56-year-old male driver and 54-year-old female passenger of the Yukon were extricated from the vehicle, and the driver died from injuries sustained in the crash. The passenger, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to a Sioux Falls hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The 17-year-old male driver of the Highlander sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries and was also transported to a Sioux Falls hospital. It is not known whether either driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Names of those involved in the crash have not been released pending the notification of family members. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
