BELFIELD, N.D. — A 20-year-old Watford City, N.D., woman was killed in a Sunday, July 25, wreck about 13 miles north of Belfield, N.D.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, at about 4:40 p.m. CST, Gracie Johnsrud was traveling southbound in the northbound lane on U.S. Highway 85 in a 2015 Ford Explorer when she approached mile marker 89.5.

The other driver, Francisco Melgar, 59, of Stafford, Texas, was traveling northbound in a 2012 Dodge Ram 5500. He turned left and entered the southbound lane, forcing Johnsrud to correct, according to highway patrol.

The vehicles collided in the southbound lane, with Johnsrud's vehicle coming to rest in the west ditch and Melgar's vehicle on the west shoulder.

Johnsrud was killed in the wreck. She was wearing a seat belt, and her airbags deployed, according to highway patrol. Melgar suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Highway 85 was closed to traffic for four hours, with traffic detoured until the scene could be cleared.
