Bird enthusiasts observed 66 species of their feathery friends Oct. 9 in the annual Big Sit event at Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge.
The Big Sit is an annual birding event in which individuals and families can spot and identify birds in their natural habitat. Watchers of all experience levels see winter birds like juncos and white crown sparrows, late migrants like robins and western meadowlarks. Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge sponsored the event, which was held at its Warbler Woodland Wildlife Viewing Area at the refuge 20 miles north of Jamestown.
Birders Ron Martin and Corey Ellingson helped the group observe 53 birds from within the area's circle and an additional 13 species outside the circle.
