Burlington sets hearing on flood control project

BURLINGTON, N.D. (AP) -- A hearing is scheduled Monday night in Burlington to give residents a chance to discuss or dispute special assessments related to flood control.

BURLINGTON, N.D. (AP) -- A hearing is scheduled Monday night in Burlington to give residents a chance to discuss or dispute special assessments related to flood control.

The Minot Daily News reports that a plan to acquire and demolish 11 houses will cost Burlington residents $1.8 million over the next 20 years. Removing the houses will enable the city to build temporary levees if necessary to protect against future flooding.

Property owners are looking at individual special assessments ranging from less than $100 to more than $5,800, depending on the size and location of their property. The city is looking for outside funding to reduce the amounts that people will have to pay.

City Engineer Ryan Ackerman says the city received only one protest when it proposed the special assessment district.
