Car crash kills 1 near Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- The Highway Patrol says a car crossed a center line, went into a ditch and hit a tree just outside Rapid City, killing the driver and injuring a passenger.

The patrol said 23-year-old Kyle Maldacker of Rapid City, the driver, was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead.

Authorities said 20-year-old Taccara Jo Leclaire of Rapid City, a passenger, was hospitalized in Rapid City with serious injuries.

Authorities said speed and alcohol likely were factors in the crash. It happened just before 4 a.m. Monday, on North Haines Avenue, about a mile outside Rapid City.
