GRAND FORKS - The Grand Forks County Correctional Center will house inmates from a jail for Burleigh and Morton counties while it’s under construction
Correctional Center Director Bret Burkholder said the project is slated to last about three years and inmates will need housing over that period of time. He said officials for the Burleigh/Morton Detention Center, which is more than double the size of the Grand Forks facility, had been having to go further and further east to find beds for inmates.
“They were calling last week asking if they could get people here,” Burkholder said to the Grand Forks County Commission, which gave approval for the endeavor at a meeting Tuesday.
Burkholder said he did not know how many inmates would be coming to Grand Forks.
The correctional center will also continue contracting with Wisconsin-based Accurate Controls Inc. to provide video surveillance. The commission approved spending $546,900 to update the center’s cameras from a $600,000 capital improvements fund.
