Stutsman County commissioners Tuesday authorized Mike Zimmerman, county highway superintendent, to install signs creating a no-Jake Brake/ quiet zone in the vicinity of the livestock sale barn. Randy Jones and Merle Weatherly attested to a noise disturbance caused by unnecessary use of Jake Brakes, secondary brakes used in semi and heavy trucks near homes.
"I don't understand why a Jake Brake has to be used on a flat road," Jones said.
County Treasurer Jan Thompson presented the annual report on securities pledged by banks to cover the county's deposits. The county has about $10.5 million covered by more than $18 million in pledged securities in five area banks.
"We need 110 percent, so as you can see we're well covered," Thompson said.
