BISMARCK (AP) -- North Dakota's Supreme Court has upheld an attempted murder conviction against a man who shot a police officer during a siege at a rural Steele County home.

The court's unanimous ruling says there was enough evidence that Darin Dahl knew what he was doing, and that he could help his lawyer during his trial.

Dahl is serving 20 years.

He holed up in a friend's home when authorities came looking for him in April 2008. They were investigating a shooting at another rural home in neighboring Griggs County.

Dahl surrendered after a 22-hour siege. During the standoff he shot an officer in his helmet with a 12-gauge shotgun.

A psychiatrist concluded Dahl was mentally ill, but able to stand trial.

Dahl was convicted of attempted murder and reckless endangerment.
