Auditor accused of embezzling

NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) -- The auditor for New Town has been charged in the disappearance of more than $50,000 in city funds.

Mountrail County Sheriff Ken Halvorson said Tanya Salter is suspected of misapplication of entrusted funds.

Halvorson said Salter is accused of failing to deposit money collected from a water salesman at the water plant and taking the money for personal use over a two-year period.

The North Dakota state auditor's office reviewed city accounts as part of the investigation.

If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison.
