BISMARCK, N.D. - A 63-year-old Bismarck woman is out nearly $75,000 after wiring money to a person who contacted her last August over social media.

Bismarck Police Sgt. Mark Buschena said the woman corresponded until Christmastime with who she thought was a "captain major with the United Nations working in Syria."

After a month of chatting, the woman's correspondent mentioned marriage and asked for her to send money to "pay bond for his personal leave," assuring her "that any money she sent would be refunded to her once he arrived in the U.S.

Buschena said the woman wired nearly $75,000 between September and December before becoming suspicious.

"If you've got family members that are getting to be seniors, you may want to warn them about these romance scams and not wiring money out of the country to people they've never met," Buschena said.
