A Jamestown man is in custody after police officers were called on reports of reckless driving in northeast Jamestown, the Jamestown Police Department reported Thursday.
Jonathon Lopez, 29, who police say is temporarily residing in Jamestown but has ties to Texas, is charged with suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude police in a motor vehicle, failure to halt, driving without a valid operator's license and leaving the scene of an accident. Formal charges in the case are pending.
Officers were called to the area of 5th Avenue Northeast after reports of one vehicle chasing another in a reckless manner at about 5:53 p.m. Wednesday. According to reports, Lopez was driving a 2007 Nissan Maxima and struck the vehicle he was chasing. That vehicle was able to leave the area to avoid additional confrontations.
Officers located Lopez in the Nissan in the 900 block of Thomas Avenue. Lopez fled the scene in the vehicle when the officers approached. The vehicle stopped at the 1500 block of 11th Avenue Northeast where Lopez fled on foot. A female in the vehicle was questioned and released by officers.
Lopez was taken into custody shortly after fleeing on foot without incident, police said.
The Jamestown Police Department received assistance from the Stutsman County Sheriff's Office. The investigation is continuing and additional charges are possible. Anyone with information is asked to call 252-2414.
