Dickinson State pres: I didn't know of mistakes

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- The president of Dickinson State University says he didn't know that some students were being mistakenly included in the school's enrollment totals last fall.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- The president of Dickinson State University says he didn't know that some students were being mistakenly included in the school's enrollment totals last fall.

Richard McCallum said Friday that he moved quickly to fix the problem once he learned about it. He says he thought it had been resolved until the chancellor of North Dakota's university system raised new questions later.

North Dakota's Board of Higher Education wants to fire McCallum because of allegations he padded enrollment numbers at Dickinson State. He's been suspended from his job with pay.

McCallum spoke Friday at a Bismarck hearing to contest the allegations.

McCallum says it appeared university officials were working behind his back on the enrollment dispute. He says the mistakes were because of some policy confusion that has since been remedied.
