Eastern Illinois hires Bobby Babich as coach

CHARLESTON, Ill. (AP) -- Eastern Illinois on Thursday hired Bobby Babich, son of Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Bob Babich, as the Panthers' secondary coach.

CHARLESTON, Ill. (AP) -- Eastern Illinois on Thursday hired Bobby Babich, son of Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Bob Babich, as the Panthers' secondary coach.

Bobby Babich comes to Charleston after spending a year as a graduate assistant at Kent State University. He helped coach the Golden Flash's secondary.

"He is an outstanding young coach who really impressed us with his knowledge and maturity during the interview process," Eastern Illinois defensive coordinator Roc Bellantoni said in a statement.

Babich played college football at North Dakota State, where he was a cornerback.

His father was head coach at NDSU from 1997-2002. He was named Chicago's defensive coordinator after last season.

Eastern Illinois starts practice Aug. 4 and begins its season Aug. 30 at home against Tennessee Tech. The Panthers return 15 starters from a team that went 8-5 and won the Ohio Valley Conference title.
