The Jamestown Dollars for Scholars Chapter has announced that the Shoe Drive has 5,350 pairs of shoes counted and bagged, and the drive has been extended through the end of May to help meet its goal for 2,150 more pairs for a total of 7,500 pairs of shoes.
Jamestown High School students counted and bagged 1,625 pairs of shoes during their Day of Service. Lincoln Elementary student council members bagged 600 pairs of shoes many which their school helped collect. The Jamestown Middle School Shoe Competition provided 352 pairs of shoes toward the goal of 7,500 pairs of shoes.
Every year 600,000,000 pairs of shoes end up in landfills, Dollars for Scholars said. These shoes will bypass the landfill and be shipped to developing nations where micro-businesses will sell them. Dollars for Scholars will be paid for the number of pounds of shoes donated and the funds raised will be used to provide scholarships to JHS seniors.
The following locations are continuing to help collect new and gently used shoes (all sizes and all types from athletic to snow boots, dress shoes to tennis shoes, flip flops, cleats, etc.): Bank Forward, Dacotah Bank, I Will Fitness, James River Senior Center, Legacy Fitness, Pride of Dakota Store/AAUW Bookstore, Sanford Healthcare Accessories, St. James Basilica and Two Rivers Activity Center.
