Sen. John Hoeven announced on Tuesday, Nov. 12, that he has nominated six North Dakota students for appointment to the nation's military academies. One of the students nominated includes Ryan Hermes, a senior at Oakes High School.
Hermes was nominated for the U.S. Air Force Academy. According to the news release, students applying for military academies are required to receive a congressional nomination as part of the application process.
Hermes currently holds a 4.0 grade point average and serves on the student council at OHS. He participates in wrestling, track, cross country, choir, band and drum-line. Hermes also serves at his local church, is an Eagle Scout and is an active member of Future Farmers of America.
Hermes and the other five nominated students will have their names submitted to the respective academies, that will then determine final appointments. Individuals appointed will receive a scholarship and military appointment and must serve in the military for five years following graduation.
