Emily Reiten of Jamestown presented her thesis research at the virtual Upper Midwest Honors Conference on Friday, March 26.
Reiten is one of six Northern State University Honors Program students who attended the conference, titled “Connections: Zooming in on Honors Education.”
Reiten presented “Paranoia. Is Your Smartphone Eavesdropping on You?” This study utilized a mini-experiment and survey to explore experiences related to our phones eavesdropping on our private conversations. Her thesis adviser is Lindsey Huber.
The UMHC conference featured sessions led by Honors professionals, student research presentations and opportunities for networking.
“This conference is a great opportunity for our Honors students to present their research and be the expert in the room on their topic,” said Dr. Kristi Bockorny, associate professor of management and director of the NSU Honors Program.

The NSU Honors Program began in 1983 and has risen to national recognition. To graduate In Honoribus, students are required to complete an original Honors thesis and pass an oral defense in front of faculty. Northern Honors students have had success presenting that thesis research nationally, with students placing at the National Collegiate Honors Conference four times in recent years.
