FORT TOTTEN, N.D. - Police and the FBI are offering no new details on an officer-involved shooting from Tuesday night on Spirit Lake Indian Reservation in northeast North Dakota, but residents are mourning the death of a family member.
Spirit Lake Chairwoman Myra Pearson said even she couldn’t get any information from police about the incident, which is under investigation by the FBI.
Relatives have taken to Facebook to remember Joe Charboneau, the man killed in the shooting involving a Spirit Lake police officer.
Charboneau’s niece wrote, “R.I.P. Joe Charboneau have a safe journey to heaven, I love you. Your memories will last a lifetime.”
His mother, Alverda Charboneau, said she wasn’t ready to comment publicly on her son’s death. His aunt also declined to comment.
An FBI spokeswoman confirmed the shooting happened Tuesday, saying the FBI is investigating the incident with tribal authorities.
Tribal police and the Bureau of Indian Affairs continue to have no comment on the shooting.
The FBI has said in the past that investigations of this nature can take weeks or months to complete.
