CLEVELAND, N.D. -- A fire that originated in the vicinity of the stove burned through the roof of the former Prairie Oasis Cafe here Sunday, heavily damaging the kitchen.

Russell Trautman, Cleveland firefighter, said the building was locked up when the fire broke out, and an investigation will be needed to determine the cause. He said the state fire marshal will probably be called in.

"Right away anything (we'd say) would be guesswork," he said.

Trautman said the call came in around 3:30 p.m. when a resident noticed smoke. Seven Cleveland firefighters were on the scene.

Former owner Dean Jenson said the fire truck arrived within three minutes, but firemen had to get up on the roof to extinguish the blaze.

"It always takes too long," Trautman said.

Jenson said the Prairie Oasis has been closed for about 1 1/2 years. The new owner, Brendan Walsh, lives in Illinois. Jenson said Walsh had planned to reopen the cafe.
