Gun & Reel Sports in downtown Jamestown was broken into and firearms were stolen early Wednesday morning, according to Capt. Gary Peterson of the Jamestown Police Department.

Peterson said a broken window on the alley side of the store alerted authorities at about 5:30 a.m. A glass door on the street side of the store was also found broken.

About eight handguns valued at about $4,500 were immediately found missing, according to Gary Docktor, office manager of Gun & Reel. An inventory was being performed by store staff to determine if any other items were missing.

The glass of one display case was broken and the guns removed. A number of other handguns in that display case were not taken. The next display case also contained handguns but was not tampered with.

Docktor said the store does have a security alarm but the window and glass door broken in the incident were not part of the system.

"I think we need to be looking at upgrading some of our alarm system," Docktor said.

The incident remains under investigation by the Jamestown Police Department.
