Fire call turns out to be trash burn

A reported apartment fire Friday afternoon in southwest Jamestown turned out to be an unreported controlled burn outside the city limits, said Lt. Sheldon Mohr of the Jamestown Fire Department.

Stutsman County Communications Center received calls reporting visible smoke at 5:11 p.m. Callers believed the smoke to be coming from an apartment building at the intersection of 16th Avenue and 16th Street Southwest.

JFD responded with 21 firefighters and four trucks and cleared the scene at 5:25 p.m. The source of the fire turned out to be a controlled burn on 17th Avenue Southwest, which is outside of the city limits.

Mohr said there was enough moisture and the fire did violate the burn ordinance. He said residents should contact the Law Enforcement Center in Jamestown to alert authorities of a controlled burn day and time to avoid false alarms to the fire department.

Jamestown Police Department also responded to the scene.
