BISMARCK — Firefighters found a person dead in a Bismarck apartment where a fire started Tuesday, May 11, according to the Bismarck Fire Department.

At about 6:38 p.m., emergency dispatchers received a report of a fire at an apartment building in the 1000 block of Portland Drive.

When fire crews arrived, they found a two-and-a-half-story building with heavy smoke and fire showing from a second-floor balcony.

Firefighters used hoses to battle the fire from the outside, and fire crews then entered the building to fight the blaze from the inside and to evacuate the building of residents, the fire department said.

Fire crews found an unresponsive person in the apartment where the fire started. They removed the person from the building, and it was determined that the person was dead. Authorities have not released the person's identity.

Seven fire department apparatus and 22 firefighters were sent to the fire. No firefighters were injured.

The apartment where the fire began sustained heavy fire and smoke damage, and neighboring units received light smoke damage. Some residents of the building were temporarily displaced.

Fire officials said the building's concrete construction helped contain the fire to the apartment where it originated. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
