The James Valley Adult Learning Center held its GED graduation ceremony May 13 in the Thompson Community Room at Jamestown Middle School. Four students successfully completed the GED examinations this school year, however, only two were able to attend the ceremony.
Cathy Frey, adult education instructor, welcomed everyone in attendance. John Lynch, director of the James Valley Adult Learning Center, and Jamestown Public Schools Superintendent Robert Lech addressed the graduates.
This 2014-2015 school year was the first full year implementing the new 2014 GED test. The 2014 GED test is aligned to the Common Core state standards. Passing the new GED test requires students to have an extensive background knowledge in science and social studies. There is a greater emphasis on critical thinking skills, and more writing is required. The difficulty of the math test has increased, with 55 percent of it being algebra and including solving quadratic equations and creating one and two variable linear equations, Lech said.
Aaaron Greenstein was the recipient of the Marion Morris GED Award, which is given annually to a student who exhibits a strong desire to improve his or her education.
Kim Thoele, James Valley adult education coordinator, recognized the GED graduates: Jackie Carpenter, Greenstein, Katlyn Slaughter and Katrice Stiltner. Diplomas were presented by Jamestown Public Schools Superintendent Robert Lech, School Board President Roger Haut and Greg Allen, JPS Board member.
Cathy Frey, retiring adult education teacher, was also honored for her years of service to Jamestown Public Schools.
A reception followed the graduation ceremony.
