Jamestown High School Principal Adam Gehlhar on Tuesday received one of education’s highest honors, the Milken Educator Award.
Dr. Jane Foley, senior vice president of the Milken Educator Awards, traveled from Los Angeles to present the honor to Gehlhar, which included a $25,000 prize. She said Gehlhar is the only North Dakota recipient of around 45 awards nationally for 2017-18.
Gehlhar thought he was organizing a student assembly for Kirsten Baesler, superintendent of the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction, to discuss innovative learning. Baesler did speak on the topic before introducing Foley, who said Gehlhar was not nominated, but identified by the Milken Family Foundation for his history of leadership and for creating big school district opportunities for students in a small school district.
Seven former Milken Awardees from North Dakota attended the presentation Tuesday including 2006 recipient Lynnette Patrick, a teacher at Louis L'Amour Elementary School. Former JHS Principal Larry Ukestad, a 1997 recipient.
