City begins clearing alleys
The Jamestown Sanitation Department has began clearing snow and slush from alleys in the city.
Roger Mayhew, sanitation foreman, told the Jamestown Public Works Committee Thursday the work is being done for public safety and emergency responses.
Mayhew said the sanitation and recycling trucks were still able to get through the alleys where alley pickup of garbage and recyclables is authorized. At this time, the sanitation department plans to continue alley pickup in those areas, although that may change if the alleys become muddy and impassable.
In other business, the city authorized the purchase of a 4-cubic-yard loader for the street department from Titan Machinery. Titan had the apparent low bid of $228,000. When the value of the loader the city is trading in and the guaranteed buyback of the new loader in five years are factored in, the city will receive $38,000 more than the cost of the new machine.
