Cleanup week saw problems
Cleanup week was a nightmare for officials and sanitation crews, according to Roger Mayhew, sanitation foreman for Jamestown.
The residential curbside cleanup was May 13-16.
Mayhew said many piles of refuse were placed on the boulevard rather than on the street where it could be picked up by loaders and other equipment. Other piles contained materials that were not allowed to be collected during cleanup week.
When Mayhew talked to people about problems, he said he sometimes encountered "verbal abuse."
City crews collected about 433 tons during cleanup week at a staffing and equipment cost of about $15,900. Last year, 206 tons were picked up.
Steve Brubakken, city councilman, said city officials had met about the problems. He said the program would likely continue in 2020 but could be discontinued if problems continue.
