BISMARCK — An estimated 26,000 gallons of produced water and 1,900 gallons of oil spilled Thursday, Feb. 20, at a saltwater disposal well in Mountrail County, N.D., according to a news release from the state Department of Environmental Quality.
Produced water is a mixture of saltwater, oil and sometimes, drilling fluids, that is created during oil and gas production.
Saltwater disposal company Goodnight Midstream reported that a tank leak caused the spill, which occurred about eight miles northeast of New Town. Nearly all of the spilled brine and oil was recovered on-site when the spill was reported to the state on Friday, according to the release, and cleanup continues.
Department officials will continue inspecting the site and monitoring remediation efforts.
