GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) -- A woman has been sentenced to a month in jail for stealing more than $1,000 from a Grand Forks man in her care.
Julie Amundson apologized in court Wednesday and told Judge Sonja Clapp she had no explanation for what she did.
Amundson's attorney, Darla Schuman, said her client had bills to pay and was struggling with mental health issues at the time of the theft, between February and June.
Reading a letter written on behalf of the 48-year-old victim, prosecutor Chris Griffin said Amundson not only took his money but also his confidence, dignity and self-worth.
A police report said Amundson confessed to using $1,017 from the man's checking account to pay bills and buy a 20-inch flat-screen TV. She pleaded guilty to exploiting a vulnerable adult, a Class C felony.
