MINOT (AP) -- A cottonwood tree that had been part of Ward County's history for nearly 127 years is no longer standing.

The 85-foot tree planted just west of Minot by the county's first homesteading family, the Gasmans, came crashing down last week.

Jim Rostad, who lives on the property, speculates the tree was weakened by recent strong storms. He said he "about had a heart attack" when he saw the downed tree. He said it will be missed.
