DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) -- Gov. John Hoeven says he will authorize the use of a National Guard helicopter if necessary for authorities to respond to medical emergencies in the flooded Devils Lake region.

Officials made the request Monday after more heavy rain in the basin, where soggy and inundated roads make it difficult for emergency crews to get to rural areas.

Hoeven traveled to the region on Tuesday to meet with officials in Devils Lake and Minnewaukan. He says if officials want a helicopter stationed in the area, it will be done until a four-wheel-drive ambulance can be brought in.
