KENMARE, N.D. (AP) -- A storage tank to hold more than 1 million gallons of water has been hoisted onto a concrete pedestal near Kenmare.

The $1.84 million reservoir, to be completed next July, is to serve communities north of Minot with water through the Northwest Area Water Supply project. NAWS would bring Missouri River water to areas around Minot and northwestern North Dakota.

The tank has a diameter of 74 feet and stands about 120 feet tall on its pedestal. Hydraulic jacks lifted the 216,000-pound steel tank most of the way into place in about an hour Wednesday morning.

Engineer Dave O'Shea said the tank eventually will hold 8.3 million pounds of water. Communities are getting water from Minot while awaiting the outcome of a federal court lawsuit over the NAWS project.
