DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) -- Former superintendent and Board of Higher Education member Richard Kunkel says he will head a committee searching for a new president for Lake Region State College.

The current Lake Region president, Sharon Etemad, plans to retire early next year.

Kunkel said the state Board of Higher Education asked him to head the search committee.

"We'll be getting some directions from John Paulsen (the board president) and the new chancellor," he said. Bill Goetz took over as the state university system chancellor in July.

Kunkel said he has no idea what to expect in the search, but he expects interest in the job from within the school. The search committee will submit nominees to the Board of Higher Education.

Kunkel said the selection group likely will include Lake Region faculty members and staff and community leaders.

Kunkel retired in 1990 as Devils Lake school superintendent after 20 years in that job. He also served four terms as a Republican state House member and was a member of the state Board of Higher Education from 1999 to 2006.
