The east room of the Alfred Dickey Public Library will be renamed in honor of Edna LaMoore Waldo, the James River Valley Public Library System Board unanimously decided Monday.

Board members Charlotte Freeburg and Dar Jung were not present.

Waldo (1893-1999) was the elder sister author of Louis L'Amour, who changed the spelling of his name later in life, said Joe Rector, director of the library system. Waldo was born in Jamestown and graduated from Jamestown College, he said.

Waldo was a journalist, author and teacher who once worked as a librarian at Jamestown Public Library, Jamestown College Library and Bismarck Public Library, Rector said. She is also remembered for her writing about the Dakota Territory prior to statehood.

"She is someone very well deserving of honor in our library," Rector said. "I would like to name the books on CD room after her so that we can say to people they need to go to the Waldo room."

The goal is to have a plaque and photo of Waldo prior to the library's centennial celebration in February, he said.

In his report, Rector said the library system is 88 percent through its annual budget and is on target to have $121,000 remaining in the budget at year's end.

"That does not include additional tax revenue which comes in at the end of the year," Rector said. "From a financial position that is good."

The board approved 3 percent raises for the entire library staff in 2019. The board also approved an additional 1 percent raise to four individuals who were promoted to supervisory positions.

The raises stay within the approved $398,000 budget, Rector said.

The board also approved a $100 holiday bonus to all staff.

The board approved a $9,276 meeting room cabinet and sink renovation project. The project received a $1,500 donation from the Friends of the Library group to offset the total.

The next Friends of the Library meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, at the Arts Center.
